What is all about?
It is all about being the best you can, by setting personal challenges, targets and goals. There are 10 guiding principles:
Non-competitive: A Duke of Edinburgh programme is YOUR personal challenge and not a competition against anyone else.
Achievable by all: A Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is achievable by ANY young person who chooses to take up the challenge.
Voluntary: It is totally your choice to do the programme in your own free time.
Personal development: A Duke of Edinburgh programme encourages personal and social development.
Personalised: You design your own programme to suit you; start at whichever level suits you and you take as long as you wish (within the age limits).
Balanced: The Duke of Edinburgh's Awards' aim is to make sure that you experience development of the whole person, by taking on activities which focus on at least four different aspects of development, you complete a balanced and varied programme.
Progressive: At each level, a Duke of Edinburgh programme demands more and more time, commitment and responsibility.
Achievement focused: If you aim for the goals you set and if you show improvement you will achieve a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Demand commitment: The programme demands determination and dedication - 'quick wins' are not possible.

Enjoyable: You should and probably will, thoroughly enjoy everything you do in your programme to achieve your Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
